Statement: Texas Senate advances HB 3

The Texas Senate voted yesterday on House Bill 3, shepherded through the upper chamber by Chairman Larry Taylor. HB 3 would provide over $9 billion in new state funds for education. Following the vote, Texas Aspires’ Executive Director Will Fullerton released the following statement:

“The Texas Senate has finally passed monumental school finance reforms included in House Bill 3. We commend the Senate for including funding for high-quality pre-k for the students who need it most, tools to determine kindergarten readiness, early literacy investments, and adjusted funding for our state’s economically disadvantaged students.

“In addition, we were pleased to see the Senate restore state funding for the effective educator allotment and additional state investments that incentivize critical outcomes in 3rd-grade literacy and college, career, and military readiness. Strategic investments like these are much needed in Texas schools and have the potential to transform public education in the Lone Star State.”
